Primary Eye Exams

We offer comprehensive eye examinations as well as evaluations of specific eye and vision problems. During a full eye examination, all parts of the eye are evaluated. This visit may include computerized determination of your side or peripheral vision, your need for glasses, a microscopic viewing of the layers of the eye, and tests of eye muscle balance and focusing. Our doctors will look for signs of systemic diseases, like diabetes, within your eyes as well as eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. The doctor will also review your health and medication history to look for potential eye problems. If desired and needed, the doctor will provide you with a prescription for glasses. Our physicians are happy to answer your questions.

In addition to regular eye care, we are able to evaluate and manage acute eye problems ranging from sudden visual loss to eye pain to trauma to a "red eye" in a rapid manner. We are able to see emergency patients promptly. Our receptionists will be happy to help you select one of our specialists or the most convenient office location.

We welcome new patients and are happy to schedule appointments for you. Patients that are part of certain "managed care plans" may require an advance referral by their primary care physician.

Our doctors believe it is important to involve your family doctor in your care. We regularly communicate important findings with your doctor unless you direct us otherwise.

Optical Options

At Vision Associates, we believe that translating the doctor's prescription into both a medical device to correct your vision and a fashionable and functional part of your life requires the teamwork of a skilled optician and high quality laboratory work.

The optical department at Vision Associates offers a wide selection of frames and lenses to fill your prescription. We have over 1,000 frames in stock for adults and children. We carry a wide range of styles in order to fit your features and the needs of the doctor's prescription. In order to accommodate all of our patients, we carry everything from basic frames to high fashion designer models.

A licensed optician will help you select the frames that complement your facial features, meet your occupational or recreational needs, and also are suitable for the doctor's prescription. They take detailed measurements of your face to properly align the lenses and communicate with the laboratory for those lenses that we don't make ourselves. Finally, they adjust the finished glasses to your features for a comfortable fit. If you have problems adapting to your prescription, they work directly with your doctor and work with you to guarantee your satisfaction. For our post-cataract surgery Medicare patients, they also handle the complicated filings for your benefits for you as well.

If needed, your doctor will give you a copy of your glasses' prescription at the end of your examination. You are free to take this prescription to any optical shop. Even if you prefer to shop elsewhere, please feel free to discuss your prescription, view lens or feature options, or have your current glasses adjusted or tested by our opticians. The Vision Associates Optical Department is here to serve you.

A Word About Lenses

We offer lenses made in optical plastic, glass, and polycarbonate. Plastic is quite light and is suitable for most prescriptions. It is our most popular material. It can be scratch guarded (and we can warranty this!), tinted into sunglasses, and coated to protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays. Glass is somewhat more scratch-resistant but unfortunately heavier than plastic. Both of these materials are available in a special 'hi-index' form that is extra-thin for people with strong prescriptions. Polycarbonate lenses are the most impact-resistant material available. They are especially recommended for children, sports enthusiasts, and people with other hazardous activities. All of these materials can be made photochromic which means they can darken automatically in the sunlight.

We make standard single vision, bifocals and trifocals for patients who need help focusing at different distances, and the new progressive "no-line bifocal" glasses using brands approved by our doctors. Special purpose glasses such as those used for computer work or certain sports are also available. We offer the usual range of tints for sunglasses using various colors for your needs, polarization to reduce glare, anti-reflection coating, and UV protection. The opticians can demonstrate these features.

Please be sure to discuss your special visual needs with your doctor and our opticians in order to optimize your vision correction.
